Every Love God Greatly study highlights one of the languages we serve – our new study, Living Faithful in a Faithless Land, includes the highlight of our Japanese branch!

Join us in prayer for Rie, her team, and the women of her language and nation as you read her story, and help us spread God’s Word in Japanese!

My name is Rie. I was born and raised in Japan, a country where only a few people per thousand are Christians. However, I was blessed to meet a Christian woman when I was very little. I will never forget her and her devoted love for Jesus.

When I was 3 or 4 years old, an American woman rang our doorbell. No one in my family knew her, but she stood outside with a big smile on her face. Usually, my mom was wary of strangers. For some reason, she wasn’t that day. The mysterious woman said that parents and children need God and invited us to her church, which was just 20 seconds on foot from our home. This is how my mom and I first experienced the love of Jesus and became Christians.

This American woman, a missionary’s wife, became like a grandma to me. She taught Sunday school, led worship with the organ, and baked and cooked for teatime and lunchtime. When I was a girl, I thought her cakes and cookies were great. It wasn’t until after she and her husband retired and went back to the States that I realized the true virtue she showed me. It was the love of God and a love for God’s Word. She taught me not only Bible stories but also how to love others, my family, myself, and Jesus Christ. I came to know God’s love through her.

Sometimes I wonder what it means to be a Christian in Japan. I often feel overwhelmed by the fact that so many people don’t know Jesus here. However, God brought that woman to inspire, encourage, and equip me to become a Christian. Like she did with me, I should share the gospel with people who don’t yet know Him, too. It will take a long time to spread the gospel in Japan. Even if it is hard, I believe with God’s help I can share His love and the gospel, and I believe you, who are reading this testimony right now, can, too.
